Summary

A revelatory account of how King George VI and Queen Elizabeth's loving marriage saved the monarchy during World War II, and how they raised their daughter to become Queen Elizabeth II, based on exclusive access to the Royal Archives--from the bestselling author of Elizabeth the Queen and Prince Charles

Granted special access by Queen Elizabeth II to her parents' letters and diaries and to the papers of their close friends and family, Sally Bedell Smith brings the love story of this iconic royal couple to vibrant life。 This deeply researched and revealing book shows how a loving and devoted marriage helped the King and Queen meet the challenges of World War II, lead a nation, solidify the public's faith in the monarchy, and raise their daughters, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret。

When King Edward VIII abdicated the throne in 1936, shattering the crown's reputation, his younger brother, known as Bertie, assumed his father's name and became King George VI。 Shy, sensitive, and afflicted with a stutter, George VI had never imagined that he would become King。 His wife Elizabeth, a pretty, confident, and outgoing woman who became known later in life as "the Queen Mum," strengthened and advised her husband。 With his wife's support, guidance, and love, George VI was able to overcome his insecurities and become an exceptional leader, navigating the country through World War II, establishing a relationship with Winston Churchill, visiting Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt in Washington and in Hyde Park, and inspiring the British people with his courage and compassion during the blitz。 Simultaneously, George VI and Elizabeth raised their daughter Princess Elizabeth, who spent her childhood watching and learning from her parents to become the future queen。 She fell in love with Prince Philip at thirteen。

Sally Bedell Smith gives us an inside view of the lives, struggles, hopes, and triumphs of King George VI and Elizabeth during a dramatic time in history。

George VI and Elizabeth is Sally Bedell Smith's tribute to Albert and Elizabeth's journey to the throne。 Albert was never meant to be King but after the abdication of his older brother Edward, the Prince of Wales, (known as David) he takes up the role as King with his loving and supportive wife Elizabeth and ultimately saves the monarchy into the future。With the permission of Queen Elizabeth II, the author was given access to the Royal Archives in order to write this memoir of George VI and Eliz George VI and Elizabeth is Sally Bedell Smith's tribute to Albert and Elizabeth's journey to the throne。 Albert was never meant to be King but after the abdication of his older brother Edward, the Prince of Wales, (known as David) he takes up the role as King with his loving and supportive wife Elizabeth and ultimately saves the monarchy into the future。With the permission of Queen Elizabeth II, the author was given access to the Royal Archives in order to write this memoir of George VI and Elizabeth to be published in 2023 on what would be their 100th anniversary。 This is an extensive retelling of the history of their lives and the impact they had。 The Kindle version is 1083 pages with just under 30% contains References, Acknowledgements, and Sources。 The Hardback version is 736 pages with the same 30% at the end。 This book took me four days to read。 There was a lot of information dedicated to their life before the abdication。 The telling of their romance and Prince Albert's unwavering focus to marry Elizabeth in spite of having to propose three times and their unexpected reign。 From the letters written by Elizabeth to David we see that there was a wonderful relationship in those early years before George V dies with Albert, Elizabeth and Edward the Prince of Wales。Albert grew up to be a dutiful son but also with a severe stammer that is exasperated when stressed, he with Elizabeth's assurances seeks help from Lyle Logue who helps him to overcome the impediment。 (Watch the movie "The King' Speech") Spoiled Edward however did not see the monarchy as his duty, having little interest in all the old fashioned and traditional ways, but was more focused on being a self-absorbed, selfish, partying, playboy engaging in relationships with married women。 He eventually meets Wallis Simpson, an American married woman, and openly takes up with her。 The news of this relationship is well-known to the Americans and is diligently kept secret from the British subjects as deference to the Monarchy。 When the truth comes out it threatens the future of the royal Family。 Before King George V dies, he ominously states "After I am dead the boy will ruin himself within twelve months。" There are many fears of the new King Edward VIII behavior。 The boxes with the important documents are left out for "a certain person" as she is referred to by Queen Mary, to be read without care for its importance and secrecy。 As he continues to live his life with still married Mrs。 Simpson, the palace and the Royal Family take a stand that she will not be welcome nor accepted into the monarchy。 Edward VIII also takes a stand and threatens to abdicate never believing they will call his bluff, but indeed finally abdicates believing himself to be unfairly treated victim eventually exiled in France。 In the future years the Duke of Windsor will make several unsuccessful attempts to return with the possibility of usurping the King believing his return will be accepted with the Duchess of Windsor at his side。Albert becomes King George VI with devoted Elizabeth as his Queen and their daughters Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret。 The British people are very happy by the newly crowned couple。 Queen Elizabeth has a special way about her that endears her to the people and in time she will be remembered fondly as the loved Queen Mum。I'm not necessarily fond of books about war, but this is so much more than that in spite of taking place during WWII time frame。 There was so much detail about the Duke of Windsor interactions with Hitler and the Marburgh files makes it so fascinating to read。 Also, the friendship that was developed with President and Mrs。 Roosevelt is definitely worth reading。 Having watched the Crown I have a healthy respect for the for the bits of history that was portrayed。 However, this book goes into so much detail about many events not just snippets you see in movies or on tv from someone else's perspective。 I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of history and the Royal Family。 You will learn so much more thanks to the authors permission to have been able to read letters, diaries in the Royal Archives, we are given an insight to an important period of when the Monarchy was a risk and thanks to George V and Elizabeth the future became more secure。 I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review。 。。。more

I admit this took me a little longer than normal to read but with good reason。 The amount of detail provided in this book is amazing and really immerses you in George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s lives。 It was a very decadent life they came from and it just makes you wonder how much longer the British monarchy can remain relevant because frankly none of the current royals are as amazingly devoted to their subjects now that their dear Lilibet is gone。 Thank you NetGalley for this ARC。 My opinions are I admit this took me a little longer than normal to read but with good reason。 The amount of detail provided in this book is amazing and really immerses you in George VI and Queen Elizabeth’s lives。 It was a very decadent life they came from and it just makes you wonder how much longer the British monarchy can remain relevant because frankly none of the current royals are as amazingly devoted to their subjects now that their dear Lilibet is gone。 Thank you NetGalley for this ARC。 My opinions are my own。 。。。more

Sally Bedell Smith is a veteran British royalty author who has written some excellent biographies in the past, especially one on (then) Prince Charles several years ago (imagine making him interesting!)。 This offering focuses on the late Queen Elizabeth II's parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth。 The author was given access to a trove of letters and documents which she liberally included throughout the narrative, adding such authenticity and personalization to this history。 My favorite par Sally Bedell Smith is a veteran British royalty author who has written some excellent biographies in the past, especially one on (then) Prince Charles several years ago (imagine making him interesting!)。 This offering focuses on the late Queen Elizabeth II's parents, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth。 The author was given access to a trove of letters and documents which she liberally included throughout the narrative, adding such authenticity and personalization to this history。 My favorite part of the book was near the beginning where Prince Albert first takes notice of Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon。 His laser focus love for her never wavered, and he persisted over some time with three wedding proposals until she finally accepted。 What followed was a loyal, loving and supportive marriage that strengthened the monarchy at a time when it really needed it- after Albert's older brother David renounced the throne to marry double divorcee Wallis Simpson。 The unassuming (but rock steady) Prince Albert unexpectedly was thrust into becoming King。 He bravely navigated challenges such as a lifelong stutter and World War II, where he was intricately involved with his Prime Minister, the legendary Winston Churchill。 And he relied heavily on his wife Elizabeth, utterly respecting her advice and including her in all matters of state。 Hitler once called her "the most dangerous woman in Europe"。 But her husband King George VI called her "my angel"。 This is a quite lengthy, thorough tome covering the subject- over 700 pages。 The last 30% consists of Acknowlegements, Sources, Illustration Credits and About the Author。 I'm not big on reading about war, and a lot of King George VI's reign was tied up with the hardship of WWII。 However, the depiction of how this monarch, with the unwavering support of his wife led the nation during such a precarious time was very important。 As his wife and mother (Queen Mary) felt, it probably helped cut his life short as he took his role so seriously。 This is an excellent biography of this iconic royal couple who indeed saved the monarchy!Thank you to the publisher Random House for providing an advance reader copy via NetGalley。 。。。more

George VI and Elizabeth – The Marriage That Saved the Monarchy by Sally Bedell Smith – Fascinating Biography and Look at HistoryWhen I had the opportunity to read the biography of George VI and Elizabeth by Sally Bedell Smith, I was excited to learn about Great Brittan’s history during a pivotal time in the world。 I believe there is no better way to learn history than through biographies。 I absolutely loved this book! It was great! So many factors made this book great。 First and foremost, Prince George VI and Elizabeth – The Marriage That Saved the Monarchy by Sally Bedell Smith – Fascinating Biography and Look at HistoryWhen I had the opportunity to read the biography of George VI and Elizabeth by Sally Bedell Smith, I was excited to learn about Great Brittan’s history during a pivotal time in the world。 I believe there is no better way to learn history than through biographies。 I absolutely loved this book! It was great! So many factors made this book great。 First and foremost, Prince Albert, who was later crowned King George VI and his wife Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, who became Queen Elizabeth。 Later, and for many years, she was known as the Queen Mum。 One can’t help but see God’s divine hand of providence in raising up these two and preparing them for leadership during a critical time when evil threatened to overtake the world。 Though they were royalty, they also seemed to be well-grounded, genuine, decent, honest, and caring people。 It was interesting to learn of Elizabeth’s reluctance to marry Prince Albert, thought she cared deeply for him。 They seemed like the perfect match and I cannot quite imagine Albert growing into the man who would be king apart from his relationship with Elizabeth。 Perhaps the weight of the monarchy weighed heavy on her and she knew the high cost she would pay。 Having previously read a biography on Prince David, King Edward the VIII, the abdicating king, I found myself grateful that King George VI was his successor。 You cannot help but see God’s merciful hand in removing the morally depraved, hedonistic, self-absorbed man who sided with the Nazis。 Can you imagine how WWII might have ended with Edward VIII as king? King George VI was the right man at a pivotal time in history。 King George VI was a reserved, wise, and learned man。 He became a great leader with his strong, wise, committed wife, Queen Elizabeth, by his side。 I also found interesting the early life of Princess Elizabeth, future Queen Elizabeth II。 From a very young age, she raised, educated and well equipped to step into the role as Queen of England at a very young age。 Another fascinating aspect of this biography were the relationships forged between King George and Queen Elizabeth with various leaders, like Churchill, Roosevelt, and others。 Also interesting were the various family ties with European royal families。The life of royalty and aristocracy was so very different than the average citizen。 I appreciated the humility and willingness of the King and Queen to be with their people especially during the brutal suffering the English endured during WWII。Author Sally Bedell Smith did a tremendous amount of research and had access to a large volume of records to write the biography of George VI and Elizabeth。 She did a great job combining all the information she had, but kept it personable and relatable。 The people, King George, Queen Elizabeth and their family and friends did not get lost in the facts and information about their lives and times in which they lived。 It truly was The Marriage That Saved the Monarchy。 As a side note, it is interesting to see what’s happening in the modern-day monarchy and how some of the family patterns, both good and bad, are being repeated。 I loved reading George VI and Elizabeth by author Sally Bedell Smith。 It was fascinating and a tremendous book that I did not want to put down。 It was one of the best biographies I have ever read。 I highly recommend this book。 If you like history, WWII, learning about the royal family, or biographies be sure to read this book。 It is a long book, but well worth your time and effort。 I would like to thank Random House Publishing Group and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of George VI and Elizabeth – The Marriage That Saved the Monarchy by Sally Bedell Smith。 I was under no obligation to give a favorable review。 。。。more

The WWII years were fascinating to read about, as a WWII history buff, but I actually found it more interesting to read about Elizabeth and Bertie pre and post-WWII。 I didn’t know much about Elizabeth, and I admit I was kind of surprised, and delighted, by her extremely close-knit family。 When I was younger, I used to lap up any and all information about the British Royal Family。 As an adult, I still do, however, I feel less “rose colored glasses” about it, trying to reconcile my fascination with sparkly royalty with the fact that the British empire had far reaching impact around the globe, and the shockwaves are still being felt today (partition of India, for example)。 Overall, really fascinating and well researched biography, and just *thinking* about the process of putting this book together makes my head hurt slightly。 。。。more

Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book!Sally Bedell Smith is no stranger to royal biography, and this one does not disappoint。 After reading so many biographies about Elizabeth II and the younger royals, it's refreshing to jump back a generation or two。 She thoroughly covers Bertie and Elizabeth's childhoods before jumping into their successful marriage and rule。 She spends a considerable amount of time on the abdication crisis and World War II。Overall this book is very detailed i Thanks to NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book!Sally Bedell Smith is no stranger to royal biography, and this one does not disappoint。 After reading so many biographies about Elizabeth II and the younger royals, it's refreshing to jump back a generation or two。 She thoroughly covers Bertie and Elizabeth's childhoods before jumping into their successful marriage and rule。 She spends a considerable amount of time on the abdication crisis and World War II。Overall this book is very detailed into not only the lives of Bertie and Elizabeth, but the supporting cast around them- Queen Mary, their children, David and Wallace, and the courtier at Buckingham。 I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars because of its quick finish- we got from George being sick to the end of the book。 While I understand this book is focused on their partnership, I think another chapter about the Queen Mother as a solo parent and dowager queen would have made it more well rounded。Would recommend this book for anyone who has interest in Elizabeth II, the Crown, or even the more current events with the younger royals; there are some uncanny parallels between David's abdication and the family's handling of events, and how a similar pattern has emerged between Harry and his family。 。。。more

I didn’t know much about the royal family and this book gives a great overview of them during the twentieth century until present。 Enjoyed reading how they dealt with world wars and encouraged people under them and the common people。 Good book。 Highly recommend!

I was approved for a copy of this book shortly after the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II and this turned out to be a fascinating way to revisit her origins and childhood through the love story of her parents。 I've read other books from Sally Bedell Smith and have always been pleased - but this one in particular seemed to be very well-researched。 I really enjoyed reading in detail about other parts of George VI's life that gets glossed over in other biographies - particularly his courtship and th I was approved for a copy of this book shortly after the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II and this turned out to be a fascinating way to revisit her origins and childhood through the love story of her parents。 I've read other books from Sally Bedell Smith and have always been pleased - but this one in particular seemed to be very well-researched。 I really enjoyed reading in detail about other parts of George VI's life that gets glossed over in other biographies - particularly his courtship and the early part of his marriage with Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon。 The section about WWII was also quote good。 Highly recommend this book - to both the casual reader and the experienced royal watcher who thinks they've read it all。 。。。more

If you don't know much about George and Elizabeth, this book is a great place to start。 It is very well researched and flows nicely。 It also gives insight into their relationship with their daughters and how their "family values" helped keep the monarchy going。 However, if you have researched the couple, there isn't really anything new in this book compared to others I have read on them。 If you don't know much about George and Elizabeth, this book is a great place to start。 It is very well researched and flows nicely。 It also gives insight into their relationship with their daughters and how their "family values" helped keep the monarchy going。 However, if you have researched the couple, there isn't really anything new in this book compared to others I have read on them。 。。。more

701 pages5 starsMs。 Bedell Smith has written a charming portrait of King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth (the “Queen Mum”)。 Don’t be fooled though, this is not a puff piece of the couple。 The author’s exhaustive and in-depth research shows in the length of the bibliography alone。 The late Queen Elizabeth II granted Ms。 Bedell Smith access to the National archives and she was even able to do research in the archives in Scotland as well。 I knew the couple was special, but I learned so much 701 pages5 starsMs。 Bedell Smith has written a charming portrait of King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth (the “Queen Mum”)。 Don’t be fooled though, this is not a puff piece of the couple。 The author’s exhaustive and in-depth research shows in the length of the bibliography alone。 The late Queen Elizabeth II granted Ms。 Bedell Smith access to the National archives and she was even able to do research in the archives in Scotland as well。 I knew the couple was special, but I learned so much more by reading this book。 I was quite taken with them。 The book discusses King Edward VII’s abdication and his relationship with Ms。 Wallis Simpson (later his wife)。 He always struck me as a spoiled brat, but I didn’t realize the depth of his narcissism。 Of course, I am a fan of the semi-factual series The Crown。 I thought perhaps his nastiness was exaggerated, but no。 I never liked Wallis。 I’ve seen several documentaries about her and always thought that she just looked mean。 Then there are their questionable political leanings。 England’s parliament and clergy did a great service to the country both by preventing Wallis from becoming queen and by essentially banning David and Wallis from Great Britain。 I hate to think what would have happened to their country…I really enjoyed the portrait of Bertie and Elizabeth’s relationship。 It was so warm and supportive。 I was thrilled to learn that the King included Elizabeth in his meetings。 She was a great support for him, as I am sure he was to her。 I truly enjoyed this book and will read it again。 It was both well written and researched。 It was presented in an easy, conversational style。 The book is not at all dry。 Anyone can read this book and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the British monarchy, WWII history or just for the love of a truly great and warm relationship。 I want to thank NetGalley and Random House Publishing - Random House/Random House for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely delightful book for me to read, enjoy and review。 The opinions expressed in this review are solely my own。 。。。more

Very well researched book about George VI and Elizabeth。 It’s amazing how many new tidbits the author has found in the private diaries and family papers that I had never heard before。 I’ve also never heard of some of the war information。 I learned a lot while being entertained the whole time。 They really had a love story and partnership that gave Queen Elizabeth II the character that she needed to rule for 7 decades。
